Philip M. Johnson is a Professor of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of Hawaii and Director of the Collaborative Software Development Laboratory. He received B.S. degrees in both Biology and Computer Science from the University of Michigan in 1980, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts in 1990. He has published in areas including the smart grid, gamification, human-computer interaction, software engineering, computer supported cooperative work, and artificial intelligence.

His current research involves the Kukui Cup, a project that investigates how education, gamification, incentives, and feedback can combine to support energy literacy and conservation. He also leads the Hackystat Project, an open source framework for collection, analysis, visualization, interpretation, annotation, and dissemination of software development process and product data. He is active in the Hawaii technology community, co-founded an internet software services company in 2000, and has served on the Board of Directors of several technology companies.
