WBI-UH Student Partnership Project in Venture Capital
Wayne Brown Institute and University of Hawaii
Access to Venture Capital Program
for High Tech Companies in Hawaii
Wayne Brown Institute
Established in 1983 as a non-profit educational organization, the Wayne Brown
Institute (WBI) focuses on helping emerging high technology businesses find the
resources they need to raise capital. WBI sponsors venture forums across the
nation which bring together emerging technology companies and potential
investors. The Institute has developed a proprietary selection process in
which almost 60% of participating companies have raised capital totaling almost
$450 million. This exclusive selection process guarantees that selected
companies have been prescreened, evaluated and trained by investors and
seasoned professionals to standards endorsed, reviewed and continually updated
by the Venture Capital Community and the Wayne Brown Institute.
Investors Choice International
On June 22, 2000, WBI will hold the Investors Choice International Equity
Capital Conference in Maui. In order to be considered for participation in
this conference, companies must submit an Expanded Executive Summary
highlighting the important points of their business by April 15. The
submissions are reviewed by a panel of investors, and the top choices are
selected to participate in the conference. After being selected, the companies
undergo training to develop oral presentations that are rehearsed and critiqued
by experts. This training is designed to assure that participating companies
have sharp, professional presentations at the conference, where investors will
be looking for genuinely viable venture opportunities. All companies, whether
or not they are selected for participation in the conference, are invited to
attend an Investor Feedback Session in early June. At this workshop, WBI
officials explain why certain companies were selected, and why others were not.
WBI-UH Partnership Project
The purpose of this project is to integrate students into the capital raising
activities of emerging technology companies. Through participation in this
unique project, students can add value to themselves and to the Hawaii
technology community by becoming an integral part of entrepreneurial capital
raising activities. Interns will have the opportunity to 1) learn a proven
methodology for raising capital for emerging technology businesses, 2) work
with emerging companies, investors, and seasoned entrepreneurs, and 3) gain
real world experience in raising equity capital.
Student participants in this program will facilitate local companies' access to
capital networks (specifically the Investors Choice International Equity
Capital Conference in Maui in June 2000) by participating in the following four
phases:
1) Attendance at a workshop to understand how they fit into Wayne Brown
Institute's program. Interns will learn how to complete an Expanded Executive
Summary, the instrument and submission criteria used by the Institute to
evaluate technology businesses' qualification for the Equity Capital
Conference.
March 1, 2000
Workshop of approximately 2 hours at the College of Business Administration
2) Preparation of Expanded Executive Summaries (in teams or individually) for
emerging technology companies for evaluation by WBI. Deadline for submission
is April 15.
March - April 2000
Approximately 5 hours per week depending on company needs
3) Attendance at a feedback workshop explaining the rationale of why certain
companies were selected to participate in the Equity Capital Conference and
work with a Deal Maker Team, and why others were not.
June 2000 Investor Feedback Session
Half-day workshop on Oahu
4) Participation in the management of, and membership in, a Deal Maker Team
which will help selected companies develop a fundraising presentation for the
International Equity Capital Conference. Interns will work one-on-one with the
companies and the business leaders that will help the companies with their
presentations.
May-June 2000
Approximately 5 hours per week depending on company needs
5) Optional. Investors Choice International Equity Capital Conference
June 22, 2000
One Day conference in Maui
6) Optional. After the company has successfully delivered its fundraising
presentation, student participants can help the company follow up on
fundraising leads. With guidance and training from the Institute, students
can learn the basics of following up on capital leads and finding and pursuing
new ones.
July (?) 2000
